Dunn County Health Department H1N1 Brochure

October 8, 2009

Dear Parents and Students,

The Dunn County Health Department supports the work of the school staff to keep students in school. Please be aware that the H1N1 virus has been in our community for months and there have been cases of H1N1 in all of the school districts in Dunn County. Because the CDC is only recommending the testing of very ill, hospitalized, or high-risk patients there a likely people living in our community that have the H1N1 virus but are not being tested because they have a mild case. The school districts and health department are in constant collaboration to monitor absenteeism and symptoms. We want to remind you that there are many ways of preventing illness among students and families.

v  Stay home if you are sick with a fever, until the fever is gone for 24 hours and you don’t need medicine to keep the fever down. Call school and tell them that your child is out with a fever.  If symptoms worsen, call your health care provider.

v  Stay home if you have symptoms of vomiting/diarrhea, until the symptoms are gone for 24 hours. Call school and tell them that your child is out ill.  If symptoms worsen, call your health care provider.

v  Don’t share drinking cups, bites of food, water bottles, chapstick, etc.

v  There are many diseases in addition to influenza that are vaccine preventable. Immunize your children to keep them healthy. Get a flu shot for yourself and your child, this keeps other people healthy too.

v  Be careful about food preparation so you don’t cause disease from the foods you eat..

v  Cover your cough with your elbow/sleeve, so you don’t spread germs by touching things with your hands after you have coughed on them.

v  Wash your hands-Wash your hands-Wash your hands-Wash your hands. Use hand gel when away from soap and warm water for hand washing.

If you have questions about the ever changing recommendations and what we are learning about influenza and H1N1 influenza, check the website:

Work hard, be respectful and have fun!
