School Threats are No Joke

There are not many things worse than hearing about a horrific tragedy where children and staff members are unmercifully gunned down at school by an armed intruder. It is heartbreaking to think about the tremendous amount of hurt and anguish school shootings have caused for far too many people in far too many places across the country, including a few examples right here in our home state of Wisconsin. When a threatening note was found at Menomonie High School on Wednesday, November 6, many of the emotions and fears associated with school shootings became much too real for families in our community.

Attendance Matters

According to research and data supplied by Attendance Works, more than 8 million students across the country miss enough school to put them academically at risk, and children living in poverty are 2-3 times more likely to be chronically absent. While a majority of students in the School District of the Menomonie Area (SDMA) attend school on a regular basis, there are a number of students in our community missing too much school.

Working Together for Safe and Healthy Schools

Students in the School District of the Menomonie Area (SDMA) have now been back in school for a month, and some of the beginning-of-the-year excitement is starting to wear off. After a great homecoming last week, it is probably safe to say that the “honeymoon period” of the new school year is officially over. As students and staff settle into their daily routines for the next eight months, now is a good time to revisit the expectations and procedures that have been established in the school district to help approximately 3,400 children have a productive, healthy, and enjoyable experience.

Hello SDMA Families, Staff, and Stakeholders. With Labor Day upcoming and the start of the 2019-2020 school year only a couple weeks away, many final preparations are being made in the School District of the Menomonie Area (SDMA). New teachers are in the district this week for orientation sessions and the rest of the staff will return next week for meetings, professional development, and getting classrooms ready for the first day of school.

SDMA Summer Update

With the calendar flipping to August next week, the start of the 2019-2020 school year is rapidly approaching. As noted on the school district calendar, check in/orientation day for all students will be held on Thursday, August 29. If you know of anyone new to the school district, or if you have a child entering school (4K, etc.), please check out the registration information on the school district website or contact the Administrative Service Center (715-232-1642) so the registration process can be completed ASAP.

OPERATION BACK TO SCHOOL

West CAP is proud to announce that we will once again be hosting the 11th Annual Operation Back to School program for the Menomonie, Elk Mound, Colfax, Boyceville, and Glenwood City School Districts. Last year we were able to give over 300 students entering Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade the school supplies that can be a financial burden to many families in these districts.
